Rajon Rondo

Rajon Pierre Rondo (born February 22, 1986) is an American professional basketball player who plays point guard for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Rondo attended Eastern High School and Oak Hill Academy for his high-school basketball career, before receiving a scholarship from the University of Kentucky. He played for two years at Kentucky before declaring for the 2006 NBA Draft, represented by agent Bill Duffy.

During the draft, Rondo was selected 21st overall by the Phoenix Suns, and was subsequently traded to the Boston Celtics, where he made his NBA debut as a rookie during the 2006–07 season. He played a supporting role before he established himself as the starting point guard for the Celtics during the 2007–08 season. That season, Rondo earned his first NBA Championship, playing alongside All-Stars Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. His breakout performance came during the 2009 NBA Playoffs, where he nearly averaged a triple-double, and helped his team take the eventual Eastern-conference champion Orlando Magic a full seven games in the East semi-finals.

In the first game of the 2010–11 season, Rondo put up 17 assists, which tied with Oscar Robertson for the third-most assists in a season opener. In the third game of the season, he dished out a career-high 24 assists along with a triple-double (10 points and 10 rebounds) against the New York Knicks. It tied him with Isiah Thomas as the only players in NBA history to have at least 24 assists in a triple-double. His total of 50 assists through the first three games of the season tied John Stockton's NBA record for most assists in the first 3 games of the season. In the next game against the Detroit Pistons, he finished the game with 17 assists for a total of 67 assists, which is the most assists in the teams first four games in NBA history.With a 15 assists effort the following day, Rondo again set a record for most assists through the first five games.Rondo's season also began with injuries. He has played through plantar fasciitis in his feet. He missed three games in November due to a strained left hamstring. He sprained his left ankle in a win against the New York Knicks on December 15, 2010, and missed the next seven games. On April 22, in the third game of the first-round playoff series against the New York Knicks, Rondo had a triple-double with 20 assists. Rondo set a Celtics franchise record for most assists in a playoff game. He was also tied with LeBron James with 6 career triple-double in the playoffs until James had reached his seventh further on in the playoffs during Game 4 of the Finals. Rondo had the third best selling jersey in the league during the 2010-11 season, behind only James and Kobe Bryant.

Pete Sampras

Petros "Pete" Sampras (born August 12, 1971) is a retired American tennis player and former World No. 1. During his 15-year tour career, he won 14 Grand Slam singles titles.

Sampras debuted on the professional tour in 1988 and played his last top-level tournament in 2002 when he won the US Open, defeating rival Andre Agassi in the final. He was the year-end World No. 1 for six consecutive years (1993–1998), a record for the open era. His seven Wimbledon singles championships is a record shared with William Renshaw. He spent 286 weeks at number 1, the most of any player. His five US Open singles titles is an open-era record shared with former World No. 1 players Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer. He won five ATP World Tour Finals a record shared with Ivan Lendl and Federer. Sampras is the last American male to win Wimbledon (2000) and ATP World Tour Finals (1999). He is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time.

Pete Sampras was born in Potomac, Maryland, and is the third child of Sammy and Georgia Sampras. His mother immigrated from Sparta, Greece, and his father was born in the United States to a Greek immigrant father and a Jewish mother.Greek culture played a big role in his upbringing. Pete attended regular services of the Greek Orthodox Church on Sundays. From an early age, Sampras showed signs of outstanding athletic ability. At age 3 Sampras discovered a tennis racket in the basement of his home and spent hours hitting balls against the wall. In 1978, the Sampras family moved to Palos Verdes, California, and the warmer climate there allowed seven-year-old Pete to play more tennis. From early on, his great idol was Rod Laver, and at 11 Sampras met and played with him.The Sampras family joined the Jack Kramer Club, and it was here that Sampras's talent became apparent. He was spotted by Peter Fischer, a pediatrician and tennis enthusiast, who coached Sampras until 1989. Fischer was responsible for converting Sampras's double-handed backhand to single-handed with the goal of being better prepared to win Wimbledon.

Sampras was an all-court player who would often serve and volley. In the early years of his career, when not serving, his strategy was to be offensive from the baseline, put opponents in a defensive position, and finish points at the net. In his later years, he became even more offensive and would either employ a chip-and-charge strategy; just chip back the return and run up to the net, waiting for a volley or try to hit an offensive shot on the return and follow his return to the net.

He was known for producing aces on critical points, even with his second serves.He had an accurate and powerful first serve, one of the best of all time.

His second serve was nearly as powerful as his first, possibly his most dangerous weapon. He had great disguise on both his first and second serves.

Sampras was able to hit winners from both his forehand and backhand wings from all over the court. He was also especially known for having arguably the best "running forehand" of all time. He was able to catch attacks wide to his forehand using his speed and hitting a forehand shot on the run. When successfully executed, he won many points outright or put opponents immediately on the defensive, due to the extreme pace and flat nature of the shot. He also popularized the jump smash, or "slam dunk", where he jumps and then hits the smash in mid-air.

The nearest Sampras came to having any weakness in his arsenal was his backhand. Many players tried (especially late in his career) to serve a high "kicker" out to the Sampras backhand in an attempt to draw a weak return. A similar tactic was employed by many players in rallying Sampras; they would play shot after shot to the Sampras backhand, hoping to wear him down. Still, most of the time, he will handle them with either topspin or slice backhand deep to his opponent's court to change defense to attack.

NHL The National Hockey League

The National Hockey League (NHL; French: Ligue nationale de hockey—LNH) is an unincorporated not-for-profit association which operates a major professional ice hockey league of 30 franchised member clubs, of which 6 are located in Canada and 24 in the United States.[1] Headquartered in New York City, the NHL is widely considered to be the premier professional ice hockey league in the world, and one of the major professional sports leagues of the United States and Canada. The Stanley Cup, the oldest professional sports trophy in North America, is awarded annually to the league playoff champion at the end of each season.

The league was organized on November 22, 1917 in Montreal, Canada, during World War I after the suspension of operations of its predecessor organization, the National Hockey Association (NHA), which had been founded in 1909. It started with four teams and, through a series of expansions, contractions, and relocations, the league is now composed of 30 active franchises. After a labour dispute that led to the cancellation of the entire 2004–05 season, the league resumed play under a new collective bargaining agreement that included a salary cap. In 2009, the NHL enjoyed record highs in terms of sponsorships, crowds and television audiences.

The NHL draws many highly skilled players from all over the world and currently has players from about 20 different countries. Although Canadians have historically constituted the majority of the players in the NHL, over the past four plus decades the percentages of American and European trained players have increased both because of the NHL's continued expansion from six to thirty clubs since 1967, and the increased availability of highly skilled European players, especially from former Eastern Bloc countries.

Heather Watson in 'Happy Land' as she ends British drought in Paris

Heather Watson had only just blown out the candles on the cake for her second birthday when a British woman last won a match at the French Open. Seventeen years on, the world No 117 ended her country's long wait for a female winner when she beat France's Stephanie Foretz Gacon 7-6, 6-1 here last night.

Watson, who last week became the first British woman for 28 years to reach the main draw at Roland Garros via the qualifying competition, showed all the fighting qualities that have so often been lacking in her compatriots in the past. In the second round she will play Estonia's Kaia Kanepi, the world No 16 and a quarter-finalist here in 2008 and last year at Wimbledon.

Clare Wood was the last British woman to win a match in the main draw at this tournament, beating Gigi Fernandez in 1994. It was perhaps appropriate that the British drought should be ended by a player born closer to France than most. Watson hails from Guernsey, though she has been based at Nick Bollettieri's academy in Florida since the age of 12.

Watson, who celebrated her 19th birthday last week, won the US Open junior title two years ago and has since been making steady progress on the senior tour. This victory should take her ahead of schedule into the world's top 100, which had originally been her target for the end of the summer.
Currently British No 3, she could also be her country's highest ranked player soon. Elena Baltacha, the world No 83, plays her first-round match here today against the American Sloane Stephens, while Anne Keothavong, the No 108, lost to Russia's Vesna Dolonts yesterday.

"I'm so happy," Watson said after her win. "I came off court and was asked what time I wanted to go to my press conference. I had no idea what she was saying because I was so in Happy Land."

Although Foretz Gacon has gone beyond the second round of a Grand Slam tournament only once, the 30-year-old Parisian, ranked No 133 in the world, has plenty of experience. This was her 13th successive appearance in the main draw here. Watson had only ever played one match at a Grand Slam event, losing in the first round at Wimbledon last summer.

The match was played on a gloriously sunny evening on Court Six, which stands a few metres from Court Philippe-Chatrier, the main show court. It is not the easiest of courts on which to play. The busy Boulevard d'Auteuil runs beyond one end, while there is a steady flow of human traffic around two other sides of the court, which is just off the main thoroughfare. The sound of wheelie bins being dragged along a path behind the back of the court hardly helps players to concentrate.
Foretz Gacon broke in the opening game and twice served for the first set. Watson, who could not match her opponent's firepower but covered every inch of the court, saved three set points at 6-5 and two more in the tie-break. From 6-4 down the Briton won four points in succession, clinching the set with a lovely cross-court winner.

Watson raced into a 5-0 lead in the second set, but then dropped her serve with three double faults when serving for the match. The Briton failed to take her first three match points, but on the third Forezt Gacon hit a forehand long.

Asked how she had kept her nerve, Watson said: "I just thought I had to keep hitting the ball. If I started to push and be tentative and not believe in my shots, there was no chance I was going to win. These girls at this level just don't give it to you. I just stayed calm and said to myself that I would keep fighting for every single point."
